Samsung rolls out Smart Home services

Samsung Electronics aims to make people’s smartphones even smarter by turning them into advanced controls for home appliances and electronics.

With the debut of Samsung Smart Home, the company is rolling out services that will let users remotely switch off lights, adjust the air conditioning and even get real-time views of their home via cameras built into appliances.

The services will even notify users when a home appliance needs maintenance or when groceries are running low.

Starting in the first half of 2014, Samsung plans to offer the services first for its own line of smart TVs, appliances and phones. It later expects to expand the service coverage to include other manufacturers’ devices.

Last year, Samsung created a Smart Home Steering Committee to align all of its product groups behind the Smart Home platform. The company also plans to team up with partner companies to offer additional applications for home energy, secure home access, healthcare and eco-home services.
